WSL2 - Report by Torben Fink-Jensen
Both teams started with 9 players, although MC added a 10th player half way during the first quarter. Essendon started the game strongly and had some solid attacks - with Lara scoring from the first one. The next few led to good shots but none in the goal. MC struggled to get into scoring positions but Katie had a couple of good saves to make. Essendon finally got back on the board with a shot by Alex which was parried by the MC goalkeeper, and then chased in by Mietta on the rebound for 2-0. Essendon scored again from the first drive of the 2nd quarter, with Alex smashing a good shot in. Unfortunately we butchered a few chances and MC got lucky with some umpiring decisions and stray passes, and finally scored a coach killer on the half time siren for 3-3. The scrappy polo continued into the 3rd quarter as MC pulled two goals ahead and sucked a couple of kick outs from us for 3-5. Luckily we settled back into a rhythm with a good couple of goals to make it 5-5, and then unluckily had one disallowed at the end of the quarter. We were hoping that our improving form would carry on into the final quarter. We kept ahead on the scoreboard for the first part of the quarter, and it was 7-6 before MC evened up to 7-7, and then drew ahead 7-8. Essendon came back but then let slip a penalty... luckily Katie made a great save and we had a chance for a few shots to try and get an elusive winning goal. Unfortunately it happened at the other end when MC got a 2 on 1 near goal and the ball went in for 8-9, and that was the final score. Hopefully the team can put this 1st game of the season behind them and come back stronger next week.
Essendon was defeated by Melbourne Collegians : 8 - 9 Goals : Alex 4, Lara 2, Mietta 2

WSL3 - Report by Lisa Murray-Segal
Not sure whose bright idea it was to include the word Summer in the name of a competition starting in July unless they are working out of an office in the USA. Why don't we just shorten it to the State Championships of old. Not that our girls could complain about the cold this week, as we spent round 1 warm as toast indoors on the couch. With 5 teams in our grade, we copped the scheduled bye straight off the bat, until a text came through over the weekend indicating MelbUni were dropping down from SL2 into SL3 and they would be our opponents for R1, now making this a 6 horse race. So in true TM fashion, I rallied the girls who were excited to get this comp underway. We had 11 committed for the match by Monday afternoon, then another text came in announcing MelbUni's withdrawal from the comp. So back to the scheduled bye it was. Disappointed not to play, but relieved to be staying out of the cold!
Essendon defeated MelbUni : 8 - 0 (Forfeit)
WSL3 (Ess/Mon Jnrs) - Report by Lisa Murray-Segal
The shenannigans encompassing the WSL3 grade continued, with our Essendon/Monash team receiving a forfeit from StCaths on Monday night for their scheduled 8.30pm Tuesday game. Similarly, Old Ivanhoe also threw in the towel for their 9.15pm game against Monash - so all three Round 1 WSL3 games were abandonned. In an effort to use some vacant pool space, Ess/Mon decided to play Monash in a friendly practice game. So no offical report for this junior team, let's see if they can get a proper game in next week!
Essendon/Monash defeated StCath's : 8 - 0 (Forfeit)
MSL4 - Report by Sam Brown
First game of the season for the men’s team, and it was a brisk one. Personally, I think I got the better end of the deal, reporting live from the scoreboard to provide you with a quarter-by-quarter update. This week, we were facing Footscray, who haven’t fielded a team in a while. Despite my absence from the field, the lads had a healthy bench. In the first quarter, Oscar and Ryan each scored, feeling out the new team. By halftime, Footscray had found their rhythm, and it was 4 - 4 with two more goals from SammyJ and Oscar “Desert Eagle Arm.” The third quarter was quieter, with the pace slowing and the game getting a bit rougher. However, in the fourth quarter, we truly dominated with five incredible counterattack goals and a flawless performance from our newly minted goalie, Felix. Welcome to the team, Felix! I foresee you being integral to our success this “summer” season.
Essendon defeated Footscray : 10 - 6 Goals : Oscar 2, Ryan 1, SammyJ 1 (others TBC)
