Women's A Grade - Report by Darren Steere

Tuesday night saw us up against ladder leaders Richmond with a full team of twelve. We had the bare 7 with no bench. This was going to be a long night at the office. Richmond pushed forward early, but good defence from us saw them struggle to get a decent shot on goal. We gave as good as we got, but Richmond struck first. A couple of goals threatened to open us right up, but we came back with two of our own, through Alex & Phoebe, tying things up 2-2 at the break. Richmond, with a number of WSL1 girls playing, really pushed hard to break us, but we held firm and were unlucky in front of goals. With the only goal coming to Alex, it was 3-5 at halftime. The game was a lot closer than the score board showed. We had blown a lot of opportunities in front of Richmonds goal. Katie was keeping us in the game with many saves, and many of those were double and triple saves. Alex added to her tally and with good defence Richmond could only score one in the third, so we were down 4-6 with one term to go. The last quarter saw us tire and with some average shots on goal, we fell into allowing Richmond to counter attack. And while we shut down quite a few, they came in waves. A nice goal to Emily, was offset by 4 to Richmond. We did a great job overall, with not only the seven that turned up, but the experience players we were missing.

Essendon were defeated by Richmond : 5 - 10  Goals : Alex 3, Emily 1, Phoebe 1

Women's B Grade - Report by Lisa Murray-Segal

This week we faced another SL2 team in the NYP Dragons, so we knew it would be a tough night in the pool, made harder by the lack of player availability. So we called on junior Jane once more to help out and started with a bench of 2. It was clear from the start this was a really strong swimming team, which put most of us on notice that oxygen may be required at halftime if not before. It was a pretty even first quarter with Sandra back in goals this week swatting the ball away, and some adrenalin powered shots from NYP going wide. They managed to get 3 in the net, but we managed a nice passage of play with Sally taking the ball from Sandra, putting in a lovely pass to LisaMS who whipped it into Taryn - who scored with a solid sharp shot. Down 1-3 at the break wasn't too bad but NYP started to get their rhythm in the second. Fast breaks that we struggled to cover and poor throws that resulted in turnovers did the damage allowing them 5 goals for the term but Sally put in the hard yards at centre forward, wrestling the ball and putting away a dainty lob over the centre back and goalie's head to make it 2-8 at the halftime oxygen break. We manned up better in the third quarter, covering breaks and defending well. Sandra was having a solid night in the cage, and we kept them to 4 goals whilst scoring 2 ourselves. Hannah was struggling to stay above water at centre forward, but scooped up the ball and flipped it into the goal in a blink, and Megan threw a rocket from the wing to see out the quarter at 4-12. By the final quarter we were pretty spent. We never stopped though, and our defence held well applying pressure and forcing shots to go wide or over the top. NYP scored just the 2, but we couldn't add to our tally. A reasonable effort against a cohesive SL2 team.

Essendon were defeated by the NYP Dragons : 4 - 14  Goals : Taryn 1, Sally 1, Hannah 1, Megan 1

Men's C Grade - Report by Ambrose Mills

A rough start to the night for the SL4 boys, with the St Kilda traffic messing things up and causing half the team to rock up late. But once we got going, we started strong. First half was a real tug-of-war, locked up at 5-5 at the break. The Mills brothers were doing their thing, hogging the ball and both grabbing 4 goals each. In the second half, Richmond just turned it on. Not even Ruckus’s heroics in goal could save us, and they ran away with it in the end. Not the result we wanted, but it’s good to get a game like this out of the way early in the season.

Essendon were defeated by Richmond : 9 - 15

Goals : Ambrose 4, Ryan 4, Liam 1

12&U Mixed - Report by Sheridan Mom

Back to regular rounds this week at the Hawthorn Pool. Anja, Dean and Xavier representing Essendon in the combined Essendon/Geelong team, racking up 2 wins from 2 games. The first game was a walkover as Monash/NYP could only field 6 boys in what is supposed to be a mixed grade. So one of our players joined the opposition for a scratch match, ensuring all players got plenty of pool time. This meant we were well warmed up for our match against Northcote.

In both games, we saw great driving and setting up, creating space and good covering back in defense. Dean was sold in defense and in goals with some great long passes down the pool, and Anja worked hard to get goal side of her opponent and support in defense. Xavier managed to snag 3 goals. The team keeps improving each week.

GAME 1 Vs Monash / NYP Dragons : 8 - 0 (FORFEIT)

GAME 2 Vs Northcote : 8 - 3  Goals : TBC
