Women's A Grade - Report by Darren Steere

This weeks game was a carbon copy of last weeks. We played NYP, with 1/2 their team being WSL1 players and we only had one on the bench. The whole game was an arm wrestle, with NYP jumping on any mistake we made, but couldn’t capitalise, as our defence stood up.  Alex opened up our scoring with our first shot at goal, hitting the top right corner. making it 1-2 at the break. The second quarter was still tight, with neither of our centre forwards playing, we lost one of our outside shooters, with Bene muscling up. This stifled our attack, but we were driving at goal with intent. NYP took advantage of our turnovers adding 4 goals, whilst Bene slotted a nice goal for the quarter, with the water ratz down 2-6. The half time talk was to apply full pressure in defence, and this stifled their attack as the third quarter got underway. NYP struggled to score. The quarter was even with 2 each, but we had NYP under pressure. We pulled within 2 goals, then we let them off the hook, out to 4-8.  The last quarter was better than last week when we faded, and we continued to pressure all around the pool. Keeping NYP goalless for the term while Emily continued her improvement with a nice goal and Alex added her third to close the gap.

Essendon were defeated by the NYP Dragons : 6 - 8  Goals : Alex 3, Bene 2, Emily 1

Women's B Grade - Report by Lisa Murray-Segal

This week we faced a young, strong well-drilled SL2 team in Richmond. Our circumstances were somewhat dire with only 8 girls available from our list of 15. With lots of inexperienced players in the water, and only a couple of pacey swimmers the first quarter was a brutal onslaught as Richmond took a 0-9 lead. It was clear we were struggling to keep pace, cover players and then have anything left in the tank to try a few moves ourselves. For the second quarter, we threw our attack out the door just ditching the ball from halfway, so we could save our legs and focus wholly on defence and manning up to try and stem the flow of goals. We did a much better job considering they were in attack the entire quarter - keeping them down to 7 goals but going into the halftime break down 0-16. A quick check with the ref ahead of the second half dispelled any thoughts of the mercy rule coming into effect. We went into the third quarter back on the attack, hoping to create some opportunites while keeping our defence up. We really struggled at centre forward, with Richmond proving too strong with multiple players sloughing back or intercepting passes. We couldn't get into shooting positions and even with Sandra coming up the pool from goals to give us an extra player, the defense was too good and we lost possesion or ran out of time. At least they acknowlegded the level our players were at, by taking their foot off the accelerator and practising their various set ups. In fact the whole second half became a training drill for Richmond as they used us to rehearse a variety of game plays. Instead of taking the easy shot in attack, they'd pass the ball around waiting for all players to arrive before taking a shot. But their defense did not take a breather. They only scored 5 in the second half, but we still couldn't get on the board. This was certainly one of the highest drubbings I've ever experienced since I starting playing 😭 - it was not fun! Kudos to the all the girls though... we never gave up and never stopping trying all game!
