2024 Senior Summer State League - Round 11

WSL2 - Report by Torben Fink-Jensen

It was 8 vs 8 this week as School/Uni exams were impacting our numbers, but Richmond had a similar problem as we noticed they were missing their gun goalkeeper and also captain. Phoebe was nursing a sore shoulder and we had to ration her contribution, and with Alex gone, we had to look to others for the goals. The Richmond girls were definitely a little off the pace, and Essendon were playing incisively, working well as a team with good drives in attack, and good covering in defence. There always seemed to be a player unmarked to pass it to, and Richmond were often struggling to even move the ball up the field and had to dump the ball on multiple occasions as they just weren't able to get many shots on goal. The Essendon score was 6-0 in the first quarter with Phoebe being hard to stop in CF, before Richmond had a shot on target, Essendon finished off the quarter well for 7-1. The story was pretty similar in Q2, notwithstanding an error first up which gave Richmond an easy run into goal. We were strong on defence and with Bene and Emmy able to unleash their strong arms, we were scoring at will. Mietta was doing a great job being provider, giving regular assists before knocking in a couple of her own to lead 13-2 at half-time.  The shot clock not being run correctly cost us a kick out in the 2nd quarter and a goal in the 3rd quarter as it mysteriously stopped working in time for Richmond to shoot a goal. But that was their only one as we swept forward to 18-4, with Olivia and Lara chiming in. And with Richmond a little demoralised, we kept the pressure on in the 4th quarter. Phoebe even made a guest appearance in goals to allow Katie a chance in CF, and kept a clean sheet! Mietta came home with a wet sail to compete with Emmy and Bene for the most goals but Bene won the race this week with 7 as we romped to a 24-4 win, a great boost to our goal difference which was needed to guarantee a finals slot as we are hovering around 3rd/4th.

Essendon defeated the Richmond Cubs : 24 - 4

Goals : Bene 7, Mietta 6, Emmy 4, Lara 2, Phoebe 2, Olivia 2, Emily 1

The women enjoyed an extended polo break this week, with their return round a scheduled Bye. Next week they will need to be sharp, coming up against StCath's.

This week our newest 16s player Jane, joined the squad for her first game! A tough debut against a very strong and experienced side in StCaths, who took full control of the game from start to finish.

Essendon/Monash/NYPD/DVEA were defeated by StCath's : 1 - 17

MSL4 - Report by Andrew Cover

After a two-week hiatus, both teams were clearly ready to clash after the mid-season break. The book was rock solid with 13 players listed for each team, both benches were full and primed for action. Expectations were high for a fast-paced game with plenty of interchanges. Lee rocketed to win the first swim-up, (and claiming the next three as well), cementing his mark by scoring the first two goals of the match in the opening quarter. It seemed some players had forgotten their swimming drills during the break, leading to restful bench time for many, including Surge who were a little lagging. In the second quarter, Essendon took control further, adding four more goals and demonstrating who was really in charge. By halftime, the score stood at a commanding 6-0. The second half mirrored the first, though Melb Surge managed to sneak in three goals over the 3rd and 4th quarters. Our defense was strong, and we excelled at turning over the ball. Even though some shots didn’t find the back of the net, we earned numerous kick-outs, allowing Essendon to set up an extra man and practice the fundamentals while keeping the Surge off-guard. A great back-handed goal in the 4th quarter by Ambrose a memorable highlight. And with regular goalie Felix on a family sabbatical in the US, we rotated Callum, Paul, Andrew, and Marcus through goals each quarter. Great game lads - and remember training on Monday night from 8-9pm!

Essendon defeated Melbourne Surge : 12 - 3

Goals : Lee 5, Liam 2, Ryan 2, SamB 1, Ambrose 1, Michael 1
